Parent(s): Natasha and Justin
Kristin's parents Natasha and Justin noticed that one of her ears was further forward on the right-hand side when she was four months old. Justin looked up the symptoms on the internet and found out about plagiocephaly, which led to a closer look at her head and the discovery of some flattening. After contact with their doctor and referral to paediatricians, Kristin's parents were advised to reposition her. This they tried day and night for almost four months, but it didn't appear to help much.
At a further visit to the doctors, the advice was simple: Kristin would grow out of it – and as a girl she would soon have long hair to cover any flat spot. Her parents were understandably not happy and searched the internet again to find some help. Doctors in the UK didn't seem to take the condition seriously, but Natasha and Justin discovered a firm in the USA and made contact.
At the time the nearest office was in Barcelona, but the family decided that they really wanted to solve the problem and so flew out to Spain. They were very glad they did as they made the discovery that Kristin had a significant asymmetry of 18mm. A cast was made immediately and sent to the US.
Just as Natasha and Justin thought that they would have to fly to Barcelona every two weeks for adjustments, luckily a new branch office opened in London, at the moment the helmet was ready. Kristin got used to the helmet after only an hour and has been fine with it ever since. After only wearing it for a week and a half, her parents could already see a noticeable improvement.
While Kristin wears her helmet Natasha has made it her daily mission to tell people that ask or stare what the helmet is for and what plagiocephaly is. Most parents are not aware of it at all!
