Parent(s): Melanie and Steve
Melanie was unaware that her baby's head shape was out of the ordinary until her mother expressed her concern and mentioned that she had read an article about a child with a similar head shape to Summer's.
Melanie agreed that she should speak to her health visitor as she now saw that Summer's head shape was not as it should be at seven months old. Unfortunately, she came up against all the brick walls that many other parents have experienced: "The hair will cover it", and so on. The NHS appeared to lack any knowledge about Summer's condition.
By now two months had passed – luckily Melanie then came across Headstart4Babies and made the appointment to see the specialist in Kensington for a private consultation. Not only was this to result in helping Summer but it also "took a great weight off Melanie's shoulders".
Summer had her helmet fitted on 12 June 2005, when her measurement of asymmetry was assessed at 21mm. After just six weeks this was right down to 8mm and after a further eight weeks it's possible that she may be able to have her helmet removed permanently. Of the helmet therapy treatment Melanie says: "Yes, it appears expensive – but it's worth every single penny."
